How to Get Seagrass in Minecraft

Minecraft features a rich flora across all dimensions. For instance, the lands of Overworld are covered with varieties of trees and flowers, while the oceans are home to aquatic plant life like seagrass.

As obvious from its name, seagrass is an underwater plant found in most naturally generated water bodies. Seagrass was added to Minecraft in the 1.13 Aquatic Update. Before the Aquatic Update, oceans and rivers were pretty dull and boring.

With the additions of features like corals, seagrass, aquatic mobs, and so on, oceans and rivers have become splendid in Minecraft. This article focuses on seagrass and will help players get seagrass in Minecraft.

How to get Seagrass in Minecraft

Players can find seagrass in all rivers and ocean biomes, except frozen ocean biomes. Unless the spawn location is near a river or ocean, beginners might have never seen a seagrass. These aquatic plants generate only underwater.

Obtaining seagrass is a little confusing for players doing it for the first time. Unlike most other plants, players cannot get seagrass just by breaking them.

To get a seagrass, please follow these steps:

1. Craft a shear

shear crafting

Players can get seagrass using shears only. Attempting to break seagrass using fists or other tools will destroy it.

You can craft shear by placing one iron ingot on the top left corner and a second on the right bottom corner in a 2×2 crafting grid, as shown in the above image.

2. Go to a river or ocean

As mentioned earlier, players can discover seagrass in rivers and oceans. If players fail to find these biomes, they can use the/locatebiome command to get the nearest river/ocean coordinates.

3. Grow seagrass (optional)

In case players fail to find a river or ocean nearby and using commands isn’t an option, growing seagrass is the second-best method to get seagrass. Players can use bone meal on blocks like dirt, grass, gravel, sand, etc., underwater to grow seagrass.

4. Get seagrass

To get Minecraft seagrass, players need to use shear on seagrass.

Java Edition players will have to press the right-click mouse button, while Bedrock Edtion players will have to press the button for USE, which depends on their device/console type.

Besides breaking, players can also get seagrass by killing sea turtles.

If players require only a few seagrasses, slaying these peaceful creatures might be the right choice to save time. One sea turtle can drop up to 5 seagrasses using a Looting III sword.

Uses of Minecraft Seagrass

Seagrass is used for breeding sea turtles in Minecraft. Players can feed seagrass to a pair of turtles and make them enter love mode. Turtles cannot be bred using any other item.

Being a plant, players can decompose seagrass in a composter and get bone meal. One bone meal has a 30% success rate of increasing compost level by 1. Seagrass is also great for decorating aquatic builds like aquariums, ponds, etc.
