Many Android users have been reporting a strange notification appearing on their devices that says “Downloading English (US) Update Waiting For Network Connection”. The notification seems to be displayed by the Speech services by Google and happens for the English (UK) update as well.
Even though a download icon appears at the top to indicate that the update is in progress, the download never ends and users are unable to clear the notification even if they restart their Android phone or disable their WiFi or cellular data.
This is a common bug in Android that has impacted a lot of users and the notification remains on the device without allowing users to clear it.
There are two ways in which you could fix this issue. The first is to enable the Do not auto-update languages option in your device’s settings and the second method involves force-updating Google Speech Services.
In this guide, we’ll go through both of the methods to help you fix the Downloading English (UK)/(US) update that gets stuck on Android devices.
Method 1: Enable the “Do not auto-update languages” option
1. Go to Settings
On your Android device, open the Settings app which is represented by a gear icon.
2. Tap on Google
You’ll view a list of all the available sections in settings. Find and tap on Google.
3. Go to “Settings for Google apps”
You’ll be taken to the settings section of Google where you’ll find various configurations such as Backup, Account services, and more.
Scroll down and tap on Settings for Google apps. If you can’t find this option, then tap on Account services at the top of the list.
4. Select “Search, Assistance & Voice”
From the list, tap on the Search, Assistant & Voice option.
5. Tap on “Voice”
You’ll be taken to a list of settings related to search and voice speech. Tap on the Voice option.
6. Go to “Offline speech recognition”
Tap on the Offline speech recognition option from the list of available settings.
7. Select “Do not auto-update languages”
You’ll be displayed a list of all the installed languages on your Android device. Tap on the AUTO-UPDATE tab, then select the option that says Do not auto-update languages.
By selecting this option, your device will no longer auto-update languages without your permission. This will fix the “Downloading English Update Waiting For Network Connection” notification that you keep on getting on your device.
8. Restart your device
Now that you’ve disabled the language auto-updater, restart your device to ensure that the changes take place.
Once your Android device reboots, the download notification should no longer be in your notifications list.
Method 2: Force update Google Speech Services
The second method involves force updating the Google Speech Services app so that the update will be completed. Here’s how to do it:
1. Open the Play Store app on your device.
2. Search for Speech Services.
3. From the list of results, tap on Speech Services by Google.
4. Tap on the Uninstall button to remove Speech Services from your device. This force stops the update that is stuck on your device.
5. Now tap on the Update button to begin installing the language on your device.
With this method, you can restart the language update and force it to complete.
The “Downloading English (US) Update” and “Downloading English (UK) Update” is a pesky bug that has plagued a lot of Android users. The update remains stuck for ages and users are unable to remove the update notification.
To fix this issue, you can enable the “Do not auto-update languages” option from your device’s settings or force update Speech Services using the Play Store.
